My Rovering Journey at Kisii University: A Path of Growth, Service, and Discovery
By Agnes Leah
"Service is not what we do. It is who we become."
My journey as a Rover Scout at Kisii University has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Looking back to the day I first joined scouting at the university, I never imagined how much it would shape my character, strengthen my leadership skills, and broaden my understanding of service to others.
As a student pursuing a Bachelor of Education (Arts), specialising in Religion and History, I have always believed in learning beyond the classroom. Scouting provided me with that opportunity. It became a platform where lessons of responsibility, teamwork, discipline, and community service came alive.
The Beginning of My Rovering Journey
When I joined the Rover Scout Crew at Kisii University, I was filled with curiosity and excitement. Everything was new: the traditions, the scout spirit, the activities, and the sense of belonging that existed among members.
The warm welcome I received from fellow scouts made me feel that I had found a family. Through meetings, service activities, and interactions with experienced Rovers, I began understanding what it truly means to be a scout.
I learned that Rovering is not merely an activity but a lifestyle founded on service, commitment, and continuous self-improvement.
The Proud Moment of Investiture
One of the most memorable milestones in my scouting journey was my investiture on 12 April 2026.
That day marked my official acceptance into the Rover Scout section. Standing among fellow scouts, taking my promise, and receiving the symbols of Rovering was both a humbling and inspiring experience.
The investiture was more than a ceremony. It represented a commitment to uphold scout values, serve my community, and strive to become a responsible citizen.
As I made that commitment, I understood that Rovering would challenge me to become a better version of myself.
Walking the "Journey" Stage
Currently, I am undertaking the Rovering stage known as Journey.
This stage has taught me that growth is a continuous process. Every activity, service project, and interaction presents a chance to learn something new about myself and about the world around me.
The Journey stage encourages self-discovery, leadership development, and active service. It has pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, work with others, and embrace new responsibilities.
Through Rovering, I have developed stronger communication skills, greater confidence, and a deeper appreciation for teamwork. Most importantly, I have learned that leadership begins with serving others.
Scouting and Education
My experience as a Rover Scout complements my studies as a future teacher.
Both education and scouting aim to develop responsible individuals who can positively impact society. The values I learn through Rovering, such as integrity, respect, and service, are values I hope to pass on to future generations as an educator.
Scouting has taught me that true leadership is not about authority but about inspiring and helping others grow.
Looking Ahead to Departure
As I continue progressing through the Journey stage, I look forward to achieving Departure, the final stage of Rovering after completing my education.
While Departure represents another milestone, I see it as the beginning of a new chapter rather than the end of my scouting journey.
The lessons, friendships, memories, and values I have gained through scouting will continue to guide me long after university. Rovering has become part of who I am, and the spirit of service will remain with me wherever life takes me.
Conclusion
My Rovering journey at Kisii University has been a journey of learning, growth, service, and purpose.
From joining the Rover Scout Crew, to being invested on 12 April 2026, and now walking through the Journey stage, every step has contributed to my personal development.
As I continue moving forward, I carry with me the Rover Scout motto and the values that scouting has instilled in my heart. I am grateful for the experiences, the challenges, and the opportunities to serve.
The road ahead is still long, but I am proud of how far I have come and excited about what lies ahead.
Once a Scout, Always a Scout.
